And, indeed, the Ciclovía is the largest, most frequent mass recreation event in the world. So a weekly, city-sponsored recreation event seems like a brilliant idea. Having the time and the space to exercise is increasingly a luxury for city dwellers, and rates of chronic diseases linked to physical inactivity are disturbingly high. ![]() Surveys have found that nearly half of people use the blocked-off streets for at least three hours. Some 1.7 million people, or about a quarter of the city’s population, turn out for it on average every week.
